I’ve grown accustomed to the morning cloudiness of a red wine hangover. But this is no deterrant, I am hard pressed to avoid Rumours Wine and Art Bar on a cool fall night.
Rumours has been a staple of the 12th South neighborhood for a couple of years now and every time I go I am pleased with the service (doesn’t hurt the wait staff is dashingly handsome), quality and atmosphere. The perfect spot for a date, evening out with the girls or just a good old fashioned hair of the dog.
Though my knowledge of wine extends only to such cliche catch words as “legs” “tannins” and “nose“, I try to learn more about wines, how to identify their flavors, how they will pair with cuisine, etc. I am keenly interested and always welcome the occasion for a taste (or several) of a nice red and the occasional white wine.
Despite the extensive and descriptive wine list, I almost always have a question about what wine to choose and I find the Rumours staff eager to offer answers, suggestions and a tasting of a few wines in the genre and price range I request. Such was the case last night; they even put sticky not labels on the glass so I could differentiate between wines (helpful!).
We finally settled on the Tercos Malbec (I think I order a malbec every time I go to Rumours, never fails), the cheese plate (4 cheeses paired with grapes and a divine nut and honey drizzle) and a side of olives. Sheer decadence on a Thursday night!
The weather was perfect, the night was alive, the food was good and the wine was better. Not quite stumbling home, I don’t think I could ask for a better evening, good friends and good wine, good times.
Although I’ve now written a blog about wine, I’m no sommelier and I don’t know if I’ll ever be above Colonial Liquor’s 3 for $11 special. Yes, there are actual decent wines for that meager price. My die-hard favorite, which they haven’t carried in months– Santana Tempranillo, and the latest greatest is the Banrock Station Merlot. Check it!
Check Rumours East too!
